14. RESEARCH PROJECTS COMPETITION
MEF Teaching Institutes have been organizing the 'Turkish
High Schools Research Projects Competition' since 1992
in order to motivate Turkish youth into taking an enthusiastic
interest in the sciences.
This
competition, which draws a lot of interest, comprises
original projects in the fields of Physics, Chemistry,
and Biology. The enthusiasm, shown by Turkish youth from
all corners of the country in this competition gives us
hope for better and more enlightened tomorrow.
All expenses, such as accommodation, board, travel and
tools and equipment incurred by the participating students,
and consulting teachers is paid jointly by MEF Training
Institutions and EBAV (Education and Science Support Foundation).
MEF Training Institutions believes that individuals'
efforts and the spirit of willingness can be of significant
assistance in solving social problems and that the 'Research
Projects Competition "will make a contribution to
the development of scientific research in Turkey ,and
is proud to be the first and the only private educational
institute to be associated with such endeavors."
In the 14th Research Projects competition a total of
120 students and 73 Advisory Teachers from 39 schools,
of which 29 were from outside Istanbul took part. 18 projects
from physics, 22 from chemistry and 20 from biology that
submitted for evaluation. The results were announced at
the prize giving ceremonies held on 6 May 2005 and the
prizes were awarded to the chosen recipients.
Projects from different parts of the world added an additional
flavor to the competition this year. There were 17 projects
from 9 different countries in the competition, including
from Israel, Austria, Macedonia, Bulgaria, Azerbaijan,
Slovenia, Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, Albania
and Romania.
Amongst those present at the opening ceremonies of the
competition were; Minister of Macedonian Education and
Science Aziz Polojani, Minister of Bulgarian Education
and Science Julian Nakov, President of the Weizmann Institute
Professor Dr. Zvi Paltiel, Eastern Mediterranean University
Rector Prf. Dr. Halil Güven, and the Romanian Work Development
Centre, Director of the Board Mr. Ahmet Hamdi Demirel.

There was great excitement in the 14th Research Projects
Competition organized by MEF (Modern Education Science)
and EBAV (Education and Science Support Foundation) which
was founded by MEF. From amongst the 60 projects considered
to be 'worth exhibiting' by the jury, composed of respected
academicians, those that were chosen were received their
awards at the ceremony held at MEF Schools on 6 May 2005.

18 projects from physics, 22 from chemistry and 20 from
biology prepared by 120 students and 73 adviser teachers
from 29 schools outside of Istanbul and amongst them 10
projects that had deserved to be exhibited, competed in
the 14th Research Project Competition.
Amongst those present at the award ceremonies of the
competition in addition to Mr Ibrahim Arıkan the founder
and Director of the Board of MEF Educational Institutions,
there were also present Undersecretary of Ministry of
Education Necati Birinci, Minister of Macedonian Education
and Science Aziz Polojani, Minister of Bulgarian Education
and Science Julian Nakov, President of the Weizmann Institute
Professor Dr. Zvi Paltiel, National Education Director
of Istanbul Mr. Ömer Balıbey and Mayor of Beşiktaş Municipality
Mr. İsmail Ünal.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Ibrahim Arıkan the founder and Chairman of the Board of MEF Educational Institutions, stated that they would continue to support scientific work in the light of the importance of scientific development and also added that as a result of the increase in international participation every year a decision had been taken to form an international education platform.

Surprise awards were given to the winners (both students
and adviser teachers were given the same amount )in the
first 3 places in all the branches to the sum of 500YTL
to first place ,300 YTL to second place and 200 YTL to
third place winners, respectively.
In the 14th MEF Teaching Institute Research Projects
Competition, first place in Biology went to Izmir Private
Fatih College students project entitled, 'Cultivating
Plevrotus Ostreatus mushrooms by using waste water from
olive oil production and water in different combinations'.
First place in chemistry was awarded to Izmir Bornova
Anatolian High School for their project entitled, 'Use
of immobilized ureaese enzyme in algimeate spheres, in
order to determine blood uric acid level. Entitled the
physics prize went to Izmir Science High School with a
project ' Walking stick with ultrasonic sensors and a
vibrating alert , for the blind and visually handicapped'.

There have been 3265 project applications
for the competition up to date. Of these, 925 were considered
worth exhibiting. Associated with the exhibited projects
2343 students 1556 Adviser Teachers have been given hospitality
as guests of MEF Teaching Institute. Together with this
years candidates, the number of projects exhibited have
reached a total of 1035, and the total number of participating
students and teachers have reached 2463 and 1629 respectively.
This year 356 projects from 107 schools from 32 states
applied for entry, and of these 60 were allowed to enter
the finals.
